I'm looking for something between 75 and 125 lbs. I don't really care what style it is as long as it isn't a farrier style anvil.

It's in "like new" condition with fresh paint. I've never seen one in this good before. Wish I had the cash:) If interested, contact me (edowning@att.net) or leave a reply here. I'll be glad to send some pictures and/or get you in touch with the owner.

P.S. It's local.

The Mississippi Forge Council meets on the second Saturday of each month at the Agricultural and Forestry Museum on Lakeland Dr (Hwy 25) in Jackson. The meetings start at 9:00 am when we have a very short business meeting then a demonstration on selected techniques.

After the demo members can get into the forges with the demonstrator and practice what they saw. At that time we also have a beginners class (green coal class) that starts with absolute basics and end with advanced techniques (forge welding). The green coal can last about 3 hours and is free. You don’t have to be a member of the MFC to participate.

yes sir i checked there....i went over to the delta to marks fella had one advertised in the the tradewinds.... that anvil peter wright prolly made it his self... i ended up orderin an emerson 100 lb with cams.....and a foregmaster forge..... they had some really nice kowlshwas on ebay 400 lbs for like $3500 that were super nice.... i was torn about what anvil to get and what weight cause i like em all.... and was nt sure about what horn type i wanted.... for farrier work the nc anvils are handy but are nt very well suited for blacksmithing.....so i just got that little emerson instead of gettin a farriers anvil and a large shop anvil.....

I just ordered the book that you suggested off of amazon. Unfortunately I will not be able to make it to the April meeting at the Ag museum, but unless something comes up I should be able to make it in May. I do live on open land so the smoke is no problem.
How can I get in touch with Brian Brazeal and Lyle Wynn. How heavy of an anvil do I need and where can I get one. Also do you have any plans for a homemade, outdoor forge.

As far as the forges go I have both. Do you live in a close neighborhood, open land?
Coal smoke can upset your neighbors. I like them both for their differences. A gas forge can work you to death, hot iron is already ready to be worked, you won't burn up your iron while you are working on another piece. But,, you heat up a lot more iron in the gas forge, you can heat a more specific area with the coal forge. The scale is different between the two of them but that would matter mostly if you are trying to texture your iron.
I use the coal forge a lot more than the gas forge. If I had to choose between the two and I had enough space for the coal smoke dissapate I would choose the coal forge.
As for tools, for a relatively low price... We all do.
Most of your tools can be made, by you, if you will spend some time with Brian Brazeal and Lyle Wynn. A $200 day with them would net you hundreds of dollars worth of tools and priceless experience.

If you haven't yet, purchase the book "The New Edge of the Anvil" by Jack Andrews. You can find used ones on Amazon.com. This would be a good start. Next come to the meetings at the Ag Museum where you will be able to see forges, demonstrations and ask all the questions you want. You will also be able to participate in a 'green coal' beginners class for free.
Also, if you would like, you can call me and maybe we can arrange some time in the forge.

One more thing, the first hammer blows are not heavy blows they will be lighter blows to set the weld, you are not moving material as much as you are setting the weld. The next heat will alllow heavier blows.

Will,
Keeping the metal clean of scale and getting to a welding heat, just under sparking, are probably the two most important things. The configuration of the bundle to be welded must be considered. If you would like, call me and I will meet you at the Ag Museum or my shop and we can spend some time on it. Brian Brazeall has helped us out a lot with his forge welding classes. I might remember a little of what he does and can share it with you.

The first step is for an Admin to upgrade your account to an Author. You can request that through the Contact Us form. This gives you the ability to create posts.
Secondly, Create a new Post, if you need help with how to do it, follow the instructions found on our Forum for Creating a new Post. Be sure to select your Category which is created when you request an Author account. The category is used to determine where a page shows up. More about that here on the Forums. Once you create your first post contact an Admin to have your category linked into the main menu so it shows up.
Thirdly, the best way to post pictures it is to use a Picasa account and create your albums there. Then follow this post on Adding a Picasa gallery to your post
